Cyclone Mocha destroyed more than 100 houses at two IDP camps in MraukU Township of Arakan State on the afternoon of 14 May.

The repairing and reconstruction of the damaged dormitories and rations are urgently required, the IDPs say.

The damaged IDP camps are Latkaukkzay and MyoU Gaung IDP camp in MraukU Township.

The IDPs are in big trouble as the cyclone destroyed 88 houses at Latkaukzay IDP camp in MraukU Township, U Kyaw Min, an in-charge of Latkaukzay IDP camp told the Narinjara.

“Currently, the IDPs are taking shelter at Latkaukzay community center. There is no ration left. They find it difficult to repair the damaged shelters,” U Kyaw Min said.

A total of 639 people from 159 households from six villages are taking shelter in Latkaukzay IDP camp. They are from Okkphokan, Pauktawpyin, Waitharli, Ywahaungtaw and Thayetouk villages in MraukU Township and Panmyaung village in Minbya Township, U Kyaw Min added.

The cyclone also destroyed over 40 households in MyoU Gaung IDP camp, U Win Naing, health and education in-charge of the IDP camp told the Narinjara.

“No one was hurt. The IDPs are facing almost starvation due to a shortage of rations. The IDPs have no food and accommodation. Rice ration get wet. The IDPs have to share rations with other IDPs. The IDPs have to stay as comfortable as possible in their camp as there are no other places to flee from the camp,” U Win Naing said.

Currently, a total of 796 people from 190 households are taking shelter in MyoU Gaung IDP camp. Around 30 per cent of households have no houses.

Tain Nyo IDP camp was destroyed by the cyclone. They are in urgent need of drinking water and rations as there is ration left only for tomorrow, said U Kyaw Myint, an in-charge of the Tain Nyo IDP camp.
A total of 2,864 people from 773 households are taking shelter in Tain Nyo IDP camp.

The IDPs and villagers are taking shelter in monasteries and schools due to the destruction of houses in Tain Nyo village.

A local from Tain Nyo village said there are urgent needs for help and rescue as locals face accommodation difficulty.

On 15 May, the military council declared 17 cyclone-hit townships in Arakan State as a natural disaster-affected area as the cyclone Mocha destroyed many houses in most of townships, pagodas, monasteries, hospitals, clinics and markets in Arakan State.
